The East Phillips Parks and Open Spaces project is a collaborative effort between the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) and Urban Ecosystems (UE) to transform Cedar Avenue Field Park, East Phillips Park, and the connecting spaces. Through extensive engagement with Native American, Hispanic, Somalian, African American, and White residents, along with community partners and stakeholders, we’ve uncovered a deep desire for parks that go beyond traditional recreational spaces.
Over the past two years, the MPRB and UE have listened to the community’s vision. We’ve learned that the parks should integrate experiential elements that honor Indigenous traditions, foster connections with local plant life, and reimagine the role of water beyond simple splash pads. By working closely with the East Phillips community, the park board, and other stakeholders, we’re committed to creating spaces that prioritize good design and uplift underrepresented voices. Our goal is to design parks that not only improve mental health, safety, and belonging but also inspire residents to see their worth and find solace in a complex world.
The concepts shown are 3 options for Cedar Ave. Field Park - and a final version will be released in early 2025. Design and engagement work continues for East Phillips Park as well.
